UMaine to Host 22nd Annual Beef Conference
Maine’s 22nd Annual Beef Conference “Cattle Health Putting the Pieces Together” is designed to address health issues seen in beef herds across the region. In today’s challenging economic climate having healthy cattle provides producers with production advantages. Healthy animals have increased weight gain and carcass quality, better reproductive performance, and reduced culling rates and death loss. The program will cover a wide variety of topics that affect cattle operations in the northeast.
The conference is organized by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, with the generous support of industry sponsors. Ben Bartlett, DVM; Extension Educator at Michigan State University is the keynote speaker. A beef producer himself Dr. Bartlett provides leadership to Michigan State University’s dairy and livestock team. He works in the areas of animal health, grazing and sustainable agriculture. In his keynote address he will piece together the major production components and the health issues affecting them. During his second presentation he will discuss health implications of grazing livestock.
Other speakers include, University of Maine faculty; Dr. Jim Weber covering bull breeding soundness exams and reproductive diseases, Dr. Gary Anderson discussing on-farm biosecurity and Dr. Anne Lichtenwalner reporting on the University of Maine Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Midwest Parasitologist, Dr. Don Bliss, will give an overview of cattle parasite management and Assistant State Veterinarian Dr. Beth McEvoy will give an update on Johnes disease in Maine. Wrapping up the program is Dr. Simon Alexander of Penobscot Veterinary Services. His presentation will cover a day in the life of a large animal veterinarian in Maine, providing a summary of the types of farms calls he makes and insight into the health issues seen in Maine cattle operations.
The conference will be held on Saturday, December 5 at the Ramada Inn in Bangor. It will begin at 8 a.m. with registration and an agricultural trade show. For more information contact Dee Potter, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, at 1.800.287.1421 (in Maine) or 207.834.3905.
